Medicinal Uses of Anise Hyssop

You probably have seen this beautiful purple plant blooming in your backyard. Anise hyssop which is also called Blue Giant-Hyssop, Licorice Mint and Lavender Hyssop are from the mint family. The plant has an aroma that is suggestive of mint and anise. The flower has clusters of lilac-blue flowers that appear from July through September. Anise hyssop is an edible plant and can be used as a sweetener in herbal teas. It has antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal), anti-inflammatory, expectorant and digestive properties.

Medicinal uses of anise hyssop:

  1. Angina

  2. Congestion, Cold, Flu

  3. Digestion

  4. Diarrhea

  5. Herpes

  6. Burns, Sores and Wounds

To help with congestion, cold, flu, digestion and diarrhea make a tea by adding one teaspoon of dried leaves or flowers in a tea infuser or tea bag, add it to six ounces of boiling water and steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Add honey or sweetener if desired.

To help with angina and the above skin conditions, make a poultice of the leaves and flowers by soaking them and applying them directly to the affected area and cover with a clean cloth.
